What are the Requirements to Join Share Healthcare?

Members must agree to a Statement of Faith and must be Christian, meaning you believe in specific Christian principles including the belief of “the God of the Bible, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit”.

Is this Christian Health Insurance?

A lot of people will refer to a health care sharing ministry like Share Healthcare or other popular health sharing ministries, as a type of “Christian Insurance”. It’s important to understand that even though it has this nickname, there is no such thing as “Christian Insurance” and Share Healthcare is not an Insurance company and they do not offer any type of health insurance plan.

Is Share Healthcare Affordable Care Act (ACA) Compliant?

Share HealthCare is a non-profit, ACA-exempt medical cost sharing ministry.

The Affordable Care Act

Since 2019, you are not required to obtain Minimum Essential Coverage under the Affordable Care Act and you will not be penalized for failing to purchase traditional health insurance. 

For most Americans, you can simply join any of the health sharing programs and use that as an alternative to traditional Health Insurance. 

However, there are a few states that have individual state mandates: California, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Vermont. 

If you live in one of the states mentioned above, you will still need to meet the minimal Health Insurance requirement. For those that live in Vermont, there is currently no financial penalty for not having Minimum Essential Coverage.

How do Health Sharing Ministries Pay for Member’s Medical Expenses?

With your Share Healthcare membership, you would pay, or contribute, a set amount of money each month to the Share Healthcare community. 

Share Healthcare members are self pay patients. When a member has a larger and unexpected medical need, the member would first need to pay a set amount, which is the member’s responsibility before the Share Healthcare community pays any medical expenses. This is similar, but not the same as, a deductible that you’d have with a Health Insurance plan. 

Once the member has paid their responsibility, Share Healthcare would then “share” in all eligible medical expenses.

How Share Healthcare Organizes Sharing with their Community

Health Sharing organizations have their own unique way of how they organize medical costs with their community.

At Share Healthcare, members must set up a bank account for sharing. The member’s monthly share amounts will remain in the individualized account until it is used to pay the medical expenses of fellow Share Healthcare members.

How much does Share Healthcare Cost?

The monthly contribution ranges between $149 to $659 (There is an additional monthly cost of $50 for each child after the first two).

There is an additional $120.00 upon enrollment and every year.

What is the Share Healthcare Member’s Responsibility Amounts?

Members can choose between three sharing levels as well as the option to choose between a Per Event Personal Expense (PEPE) or an Annual Unshared Amount (AUA). These are the amounts you pay on your own – either on a per incident or per year basis – before remaining eligible medical expenses can be shared.

Per Event Personal Expense amounts can be: $300, $500, or $1,000.

The Annual Unshared Amount can be: $3,300 (single), $3,600 (couple), or $3,900 (family)

Does Share Healthcare Offer Preventative Sharing?

Yearly wellness visits or screenings are eligible for sharing once your PEPE or AUA has been paid.

What about Pre-Existing Conditions?

Pre-Existing Conditions are not eligible for sharing at Share Healthcare. This means that any medical expenses related to any pre-existing conditions will not be considered shareable at any point of your membership.

In comparison, other health sharing companies will have a one or two year waiting period for sharing medical costs on pre existing conditions. After that waiting period where pre existing conditions are not eligible for sharing, there may be some limitations on how much they will share for pre existing conditions (such as $25,000 max per year). Some health sharing plans do not even consider something a pre existing condition after four to five consecutive years of being a member.

What are the Maternity Benefits?

After members pay their Per Event Personal Expense or Annual Unshared Amount, expenses related to labor, delivery and routine hospital expenses for the infant as well as expenses relating to any complications are eligible with no waiting period or limits.

If a member is pregnant within two months of membership beginning, maternity expenses will be shared at up to 50% of the member’s share contributions to that point. For example, if the member has paid $2,490 in monthly share amount to that point, up to $1,245 will be eligible to be shared by fellow members.

Are there any Caps and Limitations on Sharing?

Share Healthcare does not have annual or lifetime caps on eligible need requests.

What is the Turnaround Time for Paying Medical Bills?

This information is unknown. When I called to speak to someone at Share Healthcare about this, I was told that it “depends on the provider” and I wasn’t even provided an estimate.

Do I recommend Share Healthcare?
