Christian Care Ministry, better known as Medi-Share, is one of the most well-known health share ministries in the U.S. It’s a popular choice for Christians who want an alternative to traditional health insurance.
But popularity alone isn’t enough reason to join.
If you are searching for Medi-Share reviews and want to understand how it really works, you’re in the right place. In this Medi-Share review, I’ll walk through:
- What Medi-Share is
- How it works
- Costs and key terms
- Who can join
- Pros and cons
- Whether I personally recommend it
At the end, you’ll also find a place to share your own Medi-Share review if you’ve been a member.
About Christian Care Ministry (Medi-Share)
Members who join Medi-Share are usually looking for an affordable alternative to traditional health insurance.
Medi-Share is a Christian health care sharing ministry. That means:
- It is not an insurance company
- It does not offer insurance plans
- Members share each other’s eligible medical bills
Because it is faith-based, Medi-Share has specific requirements for membership and for which medical bills are eligible to be shared.
Medi-Share members commit to:
- Living a Christian lifestyle
- Following specific faith and lifestyle standards
- Sharing in other members’ eligible medical bills
Christian Care Ministry has been around since 1993, which makes Medi-Share one of the longest-running health share ministries in the country.
Is Medi-Share the Same as Health Insurance?
No. Even though some people casually call it “Christian health insurance,” Medi-Share is not insurance.
Medi-Share is:
- A nonprofit health care sharing ministry
- Considered an alternative to health insurance
- Designed mainly to help with larger, unexpected medical expenses
Because it is not insurance:
- Medi-Share is not minimum essential coverage
- It cannot legally guarantee payment of all medical bills
- It works under a different set of rules than insurance companies
Members can keep their Medi-Share membership on a month-to-month basis and can cancel at any time.
As with any health share, it is very important to read the guidelines so you understand what is considered an eligible medical expense.
How Medi-Share Works
Medi-Share works in a way that is similar to other health shares:
- Members send a monthly share amount to Christian Care Ministry.
- When a member has a medical need, they first pay their Annual Household Portion (AHP).
- After the AHP is met, other members’ shares are used to help pay eligible medical bills, up to any caps or limits.
Think of the AHP as the amount your household is responsible for before the community begins sharing, but remember it is not the same thing as an insurance deductible.
Requirements to Join Medi-Share
Medi-Share is a Christian health share ministry. To join, you must:
- Be a Christian
- Agree with Medi-Share’s statement of faith and lifestyle standards
- Meet their “Christian Testimony” qualifications
Not every Christian background or denomination may qualify. It’s important to read their member guidelines to see if you are eligible before you apply.
What’s Included With a Medi-Share Membership?
While exact details are always in the official guidelines, Medi-Share members generally have access to:
- 24/7 access to telehealth
- Sharing in unlimited telebehavioral health*
- Sharing in hospital, surgical, and other medical expenses
- Discounts on prescriptions, dental, and vision care
- Flexibility to choose from a nationwide provider network
- Maternity sharing* (with conditions)
- No lifetime or annual sharing limits for most needs
- Encouragement and prayer from the community
*Always refer to the Medi-Share program guidelines for current details.

How Much Does Medi-Share Cost?
Medi-Share monthly share amounts generally range from about $107 to $1,224.
Your cost depends on:
- Whether you are an individual, couple, or family
- Ages of household members
- The Annual Household Portion (AHP) you choose
Each program has its own pricing options and structure, so it’s important to review the current Medi-Share pricing tools or talk to a representative.
What Is the Annual Household Portion (AHP)?
The Annual Household Portion (AHP) is the amount your household agrees to pay toward eligible medical bills before members begin sharing in your needs.
Key points:
- The AHP resets every 12 months on your effective date
- Christian Care Ministry offers several AHP levels: $3,000, $6,000, $9,000, and $12,000
- Medical bills below your AHP are your responsibility
You can review Medi-Share’s sharing summary for specific details and examples.
What Is a Provider Fee?
Medi-Share also uses a provider fee for visits. This is an amount members pay when they see a doctor or go to the emergency room.
Typical provider fees:
- $35 for doctor visits
- $200 for emergency room visits
Routine care, such as annual physicals (beyond what is listed in guidelines), dental, and vision care, is usually not shareable, so it’s wise to budget for those expenses separately.
Medi-Share’s Provider Network (PPO)
Medi-Share partners with the PHCS network as its Preferred Provider Organization (PPO).
This means:
- Members are encouraged to use PHCS in-network providers
- You may face penalties or non-shareable bills if you go out of network for certain services
- For example, a routine physical outside the PHCS network may not be eligible for sharing
The good news is that the PHCS network includes over 1 million specialists nationwide, so there are many in-network options.
However, some people prefer health shares that do not have network restrictions. For example, other programs, like Zion HealthShare, do not limit which specialists you can see.
Preventive Care With Medi-Share
Medi-Share’s approach to preventive care is more limited than many insurance plans.
In general:
- Most routine or preventive medical care is not fully shareable
- Medi-Share allows one routine physical per year (with 2 labs)
- You must use the PHCS network for that visit to be eligible for sharing
Always check the current guidelines, as preventive care rules can change.
Pre-Existing Conditions and Medi-Share
Medi-Share has specific rules for pre-existing conditions.
- For the first 3 years of membership: costs related to pre-existing conditions are not shareable
- After 3 years: up to $300,000 per year may be shareable
- After 5 years: up to $500,000 per year may be shareable
These limits apply per member, so it is important to understand how they might affect your family’s long-term medical needs.
Maternity Benefits
Medi-Share does share in maternity and newborn needs, but with important conditions:
- The mother must be married for maternity and newborn needs to be eligible
- Pregnancies conceived outside of marriage are ineligible, except in cases of rape that has been reported to law enforcement
- Members must meet their AHP for maternity needs
- Sharing is capped at $125,000 per pregnancy event, including:
- Prenatal care
- Delivery
- Complications for mother and baby
- Postpartum care
For many pregnancies, this is enough. However, for high-risk pregnancies or extended NICU stays, the cap may not be sufficient.
Turnaround Time for Paying Medical Bills
Medi-Share can take up to 30 business days to process and pay eligible medical bills.
Caps and Limitations With Medi-Share
In general:
- Medi-Share does not have lifetime or annual sharing limits for most medical needs
However, there are important limits:
- Maternity: $125,000 per pregnancy event
- Pre-existing conditions: not shareable for the first 3 years; then limited to $300,000 per year; after 5 years, up to $500,000 per year
- Motorcycle accidents: $100,000 annual sharing limit, unless the motorcycle is being used for mission work outside the U.S.
Understanding these caps is essential before you decide to join.
Pros and Cons of Medi-Share
Here is a simple summary based on this Medi-Share review.
Pros
- Large national network (PHCS) with 1M+ providers
- Long history (since 1993) and well-known Christian ministry
- Option designed for seniors (Medi-Share 65+)
- Employer program for Christian businesses
- No overall lifetime or annual sharing limits for most needs
- Some preventive care and labs are shareable
Cons
- Complex fee structure (monthly share, AHP, provider fees, and other fees)
- Network restrictions through PHCS
- Strict lifestyle and faith requirements
- Longer turnaround time for sharing (up to 30 business days)
- Maternity and pre-existing condition limits may not meet every family’s needs
Do I Recommend Medi-Share?
I have reviewed many health share programs, and I find Medi-Share to be one of the more complex options to fully understand.
There are:
- Multiple programs
- Varying price points
- Several different fees (application, administration, provider fee, etc.)
It is very important that current and potential members read the Medi-Share guidelines carefully so there are no surprises about what is and is not shareable.
The strict membership requirements, network rules, and longer turnaround times may be deal-breakers for some families.
If you are comparing options, I recommend reading my article on the Best Health Share Plans. In that post, I explain which health shares I personally recommend for people looking for affordable healthcare alternatives, and how they compare to Medi-Share.

5 stars, highly recommend!
We have had Liberty for 10+ years and 3 surgeries in our family, I would highly recommend, easy to work with, exceptional customer service!
Helpful CSR w/ Diagnostic cost
The CSR, Antoinette, was very friendly & helpful, answering my question regarding whether a certain diagnostic test is covered. She went the “extra mile” and found an estimate of a fair & reasonable rate for this particular test, which was very encouraging.
10 out of 10
Recommended 10 out of 10! I have been so pleased with Liberty HealthShare!
Great company and value
This company is great to work with …always available per phone and everyone I have ever delt with is pleasant and helpful.
Great customer service
I have been a member of Liberty HealthShare since 2017 and only just recently had to use them for serious medical care. Their care representatives have been always been kind and helpful without long wait times on hold. LHS has done a great job of getting bills handled quickly. I am very happy with their service.
Satisfied user
I have used liberty healthshare for many years as a self employed person and it has worked great for me. I enjoy the low monthly payment and just added eye care coverage in 2026 for a very low monthly fee. I enjoy the self pay plan and find the portal very easy to use on the website. I can easily upload any needed documents and they are shared in a timely fashion.
Thank you Liberty Healthshare for offering an alternative plan for self employed people who do not want to be price gouged on the open market. Check them out and see if they can work for you and your lifestyle.
Customer Service is Real Live People to talk to….not AI
As a new member, I have been impressed with the customer service of this Health Share Ministry. Communication with a real live person is available. Whether it is questions on how to use the online portal or about eligible coverage or how to use interfaced support services, there is always someone to talk to.
Satisfied
I’ve been with Liberty HealthShare since 2016. I called to get clarity on a bill that I received. I was on the line with a representative within seconds. The representative explained the bill, my share of the cost and instructions on how to pay it. When the process was complete, my share of the cost was a fraction of the amount I was billed for. Thank you Liberty HealthShare.
Terrible!
I needed insurance for 3 months (until I was able to get on Medicare). My contract said no deductible (why would I sign up for a $1K deductible for a 3 month’s on insurance on top of the $800/month I was paying? They don’t call it a deductible, it’s called Annual Member Care Share or “AMCS” which works like a deductible for things like surgeries, hospital stays, etc. Well, I went for a cortisone shot in June 2025 and in May 2026, I was sent a bill from the orthopedic surgery center for $179, which I was told was my AMCS. My contract that I signed was blank in that section. Then it was ‘magically’ added. I would NOT RECOMMEND WeShare!
Leave insurance on the porch and come on in.
Since 2014 Liberty has served us with a smooth sharing experience. Representatives a very knowledgeable, and polite beyond measure. This is so much better than insurance. So thankful for Liberty!
Caring and loving
It’s so comforting to have Liberty Health Share! Every time I need to call in customer service is outstanding.
Customer service experience review.
Tracy was very responsive and very helpful with my customer service-type questions. She was also very polite and attentive! As with all customer service reps at liberty, I am confident my questions will be answered the next time I have one. Awesome customer service reps, great company!!
Great customer service
Loris was so helpful and pleasant on the call. I enjoyed speaking with her and although we couldn’t fix the entire issue I was having, she helped me by getting me to the next step so my issue could be solved.
Liberty Health Share I strongly recommend
Efficient and Empathetic. The folks that are behind the scenes are human and family oriented. They have been there for me for over 7 years and I would recommend this organization to anyone who wants simple, fairly priced, easy to work with health care coverage.
Great Experience
I had a great experience with Liberty Health Share. She answered all of my questions and addressed every concern I had with professionalism and patience. She made the entire process easy and stress-free. Everything was handled in a timely manner. I really appreciate her communication, responsiveness and dedication to helping me. I highly recommend Liberty Health Share
Thank you Liberty Health Share !
r Review: Every time I call for some advice or direction, each customer service representative I speak to is so kind and helpful. The last three times I called I was connected to a person within 10 seconds! They recently also gave back 2Million back to those enrolled because they came in under budget. NOBODY does that. Our check was $425! Thank you Liberty Health Share we appreciate all you stand for and recommend you to anyone looking for an alternative to Health Insurance!
A group that helps create peace during difficult times
Good evening. I took this policy out over 7 years ago for my son and myself. It has by far been the best, most friendly and amazing company that I have ever dealt with. They reflect exactly how they represent themselves as a Christian group. Their rates are the best, the deductibles are the lowest and payment after a procedure has been executed ever. I had my knee replaced going on two years ago and after my deductible was met, it was paid in full.
What a blessing this ministry is and I highly recommend to anyone. When you speak with them on the phone you will understand exactly what it feel like speaking fellow Christian people. Also I highly recommend the dental plan they have.
“Not enough information”
Every time I submit a “new need”, it is never enough information. Half the time the portal is down. It is exhausting and quite frankly, I am now avoiding the doctors because I don’t want to deal with Sedera needing more information. It is the biggest headache and my bill is now in collections because Sedera told me to hold payment and now they say the need proof of payment. I am beginning to think it is a scam of a company.
They were very helpful at helping me submit my medical bills using the app.
I had the pleasure of working with Karla yesterday and she was fabulous! She went above and beyond, suggesting other steps I should take and helping me through them, and was courteous and kind during the long wait with the clinic. All my interaction with their customer service has been superb!
Signing agent misled us to join.
We were misled in order to join. When a medical procedure was to be done, we double checked and found that we were misled at first. So we waisted $900 for nothing.
Exceeded All Expectations During a Critical Recovery
I have been a member of Liberty HealthShare for over six years, and I can truly say they were there for me when I needed them most. In October 2024, I was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident. During an incredibly stressful and difficult recovery, the team at Liberty was absolutely wonderful. Their support and the way they handled my medical needs exceeded my expectations. If you are looking for a community-based healthcare solution that actually delivers on its promises, I highly recommend them.
Medical expenses are lower
I was helped quickly and thoroughly with my questions today on the phone with Liberty HealthShare rep. I appreciate all they do to keep our medical expenses lower.
UHSM (WeShare) Does Not Work Like Other Healthcare Sharing Organizations
I am a registered nurse and am helping a pastor who got cancer while a member of UHSM. UHSM (also called WeShare) operates by guiding their members toward low-cost healthcare providers. This is not a bad policy overall, but they limit what they pay out so much that none of the 3 major cancer centers in Phoenix will work with them. This happens frequently enough that they have a policy of telling the member that they should apply for financial assistance or seek health insurance. It is not surprising that hospitals don’t want to work with them because UHSM will not pay a provider unless they agree to accept their payment as payment in full. Meanwhile the pastor’s surgery to remove the cancer was delayed approximately 6 weeks to 2 months due to this issue. He was thankfully able to get insurance. I called UHSM and spoke to Seth, the manager of the cancellation department. My goal was to inform the leadership that the system was not working. This was not new information for him. He blamed the hospital for having unfair policies that don’t consider the patient’s well-being, only money. I explained that it might be the case if it was one hospital, but all 3? He said they are trying to change the way the healthcare system is run. That is like an ant trying to move a boulder. I asked him what about their current members? I don’t think Travis or others who sign up for membership think they will be in this kind of situation when they join. They expect their urgent and serious medical needs to be met. Seth entirely wrote off Travis’s situation as unfortunate. He also said it was rare. Apparently not too rare according to reviews and according to policies UHSM has in place to deal with them. What is the motivation of UHSM if it is not to meet the larger and more serious medical needs of its members?
The way healthcare should be
We have been with Liberty Healthshare for over 7 years. Its had its ups and downs and struggled greatly through covid but we stuck with them. We’re glad we did. They have saved us so much money. And they have really streamlined the process of complicated healthcare and billing. It’s very similar to regular healthcare insurance except it’s 60% less and you have to do a little homework. Not much. For example, I decided to get an MRI at the cheapest place possible. So I decided to head an hour out of town and then have a nice lunch while I was there with my husband. We saved $700 just by going to another Beach Town to get it done. Plus I had a lovely lunch with my husband. We got on the phone and they helped us get prices from the local radiology facilities to 60 miles out. We had a choice. They even got us a better price than a cash price which we used to do all the time. $140 cheaper than the cash price. That’s just one example. I just can’t say enough. So not only are we paying way less than typical insurance, we have a low deductible and they always get us the lowest price when something out of pocket is requested. The money that we would be shelling out for a typical health insurance, when we are two extremely healthy people, are in the thousands. I know so many Americans are also struggling with this exact situation. We are proof that it doesn’t have to be that way.
The People Make the Process Work
I was hospitalized and Liberty HealthShare has been with me every step of the way as the bills come in. Smart reps are seconds away by telephone advising me on how to upload bills, have providers submit bills and deal with any outstanding issues.
I will never use health insurance again after 10 years of Liberty!
We have been with Liberty Health Share for 10 years. We had actually never used it until the last 2 years. All I can say is WOW! I will never use Health Insurance ever again!
Every time I call, each customer service representative spends however long it takes to resolve any problems with hospitals and other medical facilities over billing. They are amazing at helping with balance billing and helping you understand every process. You will never get attitude! Just understanding! Do you know of a Health insurance doing that?
A HUGE shoutout to Stefanie who has spent countless days and hours on 3-way calls to billing departments to get to the bottom of problems. Thank you for that –you are GEM!
If you are reading this and are on the fence about LHS.. think about how well you have been treated with your health insurance company… not that great? Well, how about working with a service that actually cares about your wellbeing and your bills. You will never be disappointed…ever.
Helpful Representative
The Representative was very helpful and thorough. She made me feel confident in my ability to utilize Liberty Healthshare successfully.
Customer Service
I have been with LHS for almost 9 years now and they have been getting better and better with their claim turn around time. I do appreciate that they are making strides in shortening it. Customer service has always been A+.
Top notch customer service
Awesome US based customer service. Karla W is the boss! She was able to conference me in on a call with the lab that was misinformed about a procedure that should be allowed & got it all straightened out clearly & professionally
Great Relationship Seven Years Running!
Carla did an excellent job walking me through my medical bills and explaining everything in detail. She was clear, thorough, and easy to understand every step of the way. Liberty HealthShare has been great over the past seven years, and Carla was no exception!
Excellent Customer Service
Lori’s was helpful and patient with me in helping me with the Liberty Health Share App. I really appreciated her taking the time to answer all my questions.
Excellent customer service
Excellent customer service and all of my questions were answered!
GREAT: helpful, fair, fast, easy
I am in that horrible time in life where I am retired (yeah!) but not on Medicare yet (ugh) so my healthcare is tough. I have been surviving since age 52 and have found that Liberty Healthshare is the BEST solution. They are so easy to work with, not complex, pre-approval is minimal and very seamless. Submitting my expenses is easy. It is just a great caring organization and folks like Tracy and others on the phones there really are helpful! Highly recommend Liberty HealthShare as a healthcare solution!!!
Staff is incredibly helpful.
The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and incredibly helpful. They explained everything necessary to submit for reimbursement.,Highly recommend!!
Loving Liberty!
I shopped around and this health sharing program clearly stood out from the rest! Their customer service was exceptional—every question I had was answered with patience and clear explanations. Truly a company that cares about its members.
Forever grateful!
I have been a member of Liberty HealthShare for 10 years and I am very thankful for their services, their professionalism and their assistance. I went through breast cancer in 2022 and LHS helped me with the entire cost of the treatment. I will be forever grateful.
Freedom in Healthcare
I find them very helpful and responsive. I have recommended several people who also really appreciate LHS. It is less expensive with more freedom to choose doctors without paying for the bureaucracy of a large insurance company.
I am glad to be a member
I have been a Liberty HealthShare member for about 10 years. I have seen the company expand in size and programs and have experienced their drive to make their programs better and more affordable for their members. All that makes this HealthShare program unique and great. I am grateful and pleased to be a member of Liberty HealthShare!
Liberty it’s a blessing
I am happy they are friendly, and the questions are answered! I have been a member for a while and they are always helpful. And yes financially they are a huge blessing!
Emotional, mental, and physically stressful and anxiety inducing
If I could give no stars I would. I’ll just bucket point the issues here we had over 1.5 as members and the 2+ years since CANCELLING and they still have not finished certain claims.
1. Customer service- would not have record of our claim despite emails and letters from them
2. Had to track our claims ourselves with when we had to contract UHSM for updates or why the hospital never received the forms or payments.
3. Eventually demanded a manager instead of staff member to work out file. Still slow in ineffective.
4. Paid our portions through advise from them but then the hospital saying they never received any letters or communication from them. We had to be the mediator between UHSM and the hospital as they never called.
5. NO FOLLOW UPS OR COMMUNICATION nor do they record when you called or when others did any work on the claim.
6. Sent to collection on 5 different claims because of the previous 5 points and the hospital being gracious after we explained it is UHSM’s delay and fault because they showed our history of payments were always on time or in full.
7. Then they send us to their legal dept to help resolve the billing disputes 3 of our large medical bills, same issue as above but even harder to reach our representative for updates. They said it was closed 3 different times but the hospital received nothing nor any communication from them on file.
8. Lastly, we were told these 3 claims would be reached out to again after they said it was closed because the hospital never responded so the statutes of limitation was reached and we were not responsible for the cost. Hospital said they never received it but also they don’t do that, so UHSM/HST sent another letter which I signed and then said instead of us not owing anything else since we paid our $1900 in good faith for our portion, we owed $2300 instead of the remaining about $2700….
Called the hospital and they said they had not received or agreed to any new amount so UHSM/HST MADE UP THE AMOUNT WE HAD TO PAY.
All in all, do not even consider this company. We gave them grace upon grace, do all the work calling and organizing the information, went through financial stress and anxiety over what was days of total hours worked on these things, and in more considering just paying the remaining claims (3+ years old) myself to just be done with them.
Billing Help
It was a great experience dealing with a professional human being. I am not a fan of AI and still prefer to talk to a human. This lady was able to communicate with me and helped me solve my problem. She stayed on the phone with me until I could get into my account and directed me how to change my accounting procedure. Very friendly and very professional. People like this make the world a better place. Thank you so much for the help.
I have saved $$$$ with Liberty HS!
I have been with LHS for over 10yrs! I feel very fortunate to have joined with them many years ago. I have saved $$$$ in monthly premiums! I also like the $1000 “deductible” which LHS terms unshare amount. They cover my wellness exams and my colonoscopies. And they were there for me when I really needed it and spent 3 days in the hospital. The hospital dealt directly with LHS on the bills. I paid my $1000 unshare amount and that was it. I even wrote the CEO of Liberty to personally Thank them after that. I try to tell as many of my friends as I can about LHS. Again, I feel very fortunate to be apart of this Healthcare alternative!
Great service & community
Such a great service & community. Thank you for coming to our aid when Obamacare cancelled our insurance for having a small business owned and employed by only my husband and I.
Thanks Liberty Healthshare!
Very impressed with Liberty HealthShare
I am a new member of Liberty HealthShare. Anytime I have called to ask a question, the person I talk to has always been very friendly and helpful. I didn’t feel rushed or feel silly for asking questions.
A great insurance company
We have been on LHS since 2019. It’s an unconventional type of insurance but it works. Through the years it has been getting easier to use and more of our health care providers are aware of LHS and are more willing to work with them. We have saved so much money by using LHS. Never had any problems with customer service when we did need help.
10 years of great service
Sandra was very helpful, kind and informative. I appreciate the work Liberty Health share does to assist people with their medical needs. My family has been a member for 10 years
Top-notch support team!
I’ve been a member of Liberty HealthShare for several years and have consistently had great experiences with their phone support team. They’re knowledgeable, solution-oriented, and – most importantly – very kind. I highly recommend this community and the services they provide
FANTASTIC PEOPLE
VERY HAPPY WITH THE SERVICE, A CUSTOMER FOR MANY YEARS
Excellent Company/Excellent customer service
I’ve been a member since 2019. Customer Service is always AWESOME and I’m very pleased with my plan/program. Website is easy to maneauver.
A great choice
We were with CHM for 11 years and never once had a complaint. It’s reasonably priced, offers several plan options, and always came through for us- even when our medical bills were significant. We are on Medicare now so we are no longer with CHM but I highly recommend them if you are looking for affordable healthcare. Gathering and submitting the medical bills seems like a bother, but they have made it pretty easy to do on their website. It does take a while to be reimbursed but it’s worth the wait for the lower premium. As an added bonus, every customer service representative I spoke to at CHM was friendly and helpful. Every. Single. Time.
Health shares are not insurance and do not offer insurance coverage. Membership in a health share does not guarantee the payment or reimbursement of medical expenses. Each organization operates under its own membership guidelines, which determine what expenses may be eligible for sharing. This publication is for informational purposes only and is not provided by an insurance company.
