When it comes to healthcare sharing, one of the most common questions people have is how Sedera handles pre-existing conditions. Understanding these guidelines can help you know what medical needs are eligible for sharing and when.

What Is Considered a Pre-Existing Condition?

Sedera defines a pre-existing condition as any medical condition that existed before your membership began.
This includes conditions that were:

  • Diagnosed or suspected before joining
  • Producing observable signs or symptoms
  • Treated or medicated in the past

In other words, if a condition showed any symptoms or required treatment before your Sedera membership started, it’s considered pre-existing.

However, if 36 consecutive months have passed with no symptoms, treatments, or medications, and no medical suspicion that the condition is returning, it is no longer considered pre-existing. At that point, needs related to that condition can become fully shareable.

This guideline applies even if the original condition was misdiagnosed or its cause was unknown at the time.

Sedera’s Sharing Limits for Pre-Existing Conditions

Sedera uses a gradual timeline to determine how much a pre-existing condition can be shared after membership begins. Here’s the breakdown:

Time Since Membership BeganSharing Eligibility for Pre-Existing Conditions
First 12 monthsNot shareable
Months 13–24Shareable up to $25,000
Months 25–36Shareable up to $50,000
Month 37 and beyondFully shareable

This structure allows members to eventually have full access to community sharing for conditions that have remained stable and symptom-free over time.

Why Sedera Takes This Approach

Sedera’s approach to pre-existing conditions helps keep monthly costs affordable for all members while still providing a clear path to full sharing eligibility. By encouraging members to maintain good health and stability over time, Sedera ensures that community resources remain available for both new and ongoing needs.

Final Thoughts

If you’re thinking about joining Sedera and have a history of medical issues, review your health history and timeline carefully. Many members find that once their condition has been stable for three years, it becomes fully shareable — offering both peace of mind and financial relief.

For more details, you can review Sedera’s Member Guidelines or talk directly with a Sedera representative to confirm how your specific condition may be handled.

Health shares are not insurance and do not offer insurance coverage. Membership in a health share does not guarantee the payment or reimbursement of medical expenses. Each organization operates under its own membership guidelines, which determine what expenses may be eligible for sharing. Holly Patiño
Hello! My name is Holly, and I am so happy you have found my website! Before I left the workforce to become a stay-at-home mom, I spent 11 years working for an Investing Education company, later acquired by a large brokerage firm, where I specialized in Risk Management. With that experience, I have become very thorough with legal documents, which I used to comb through and really deep dive into each Health Share’s website to determine what medical bills are actually shareable with their members. I have created Health Share 101 to provide the information you need to make an educated decision for you and your family.
