CrowdHealth Reviews

A lot of people having been asking me about CrowdHealth lately, so I wanted to address some of my thoughts and concerns in this blog post.

If you are here on this blog post, you’ve probably seen their marketing efforts show that Insurance is the “bad guy” and “broken” – which is not something I will argue with. I think we would both agree that if someone is under 65 years old and healthy, health insurance is extremely expensive and not the best option for them.

About CrowdHealth

CrowdHealth is a for profit company that started in 2021. They now have a community of over 17,000 members (updated November 2025).

At first glance, they operate in the same way as health share companies, with members reimbursing each other medical bills and healthcare expenses.

CrowdHealth is not a Health Share.

CrowdHealth is a for-profit company that has created a new way for people to share each other’s medical expenses, using a crowdfunding model to pay medical bills in the community.

They are transparent about their pricing and state that 100% of the member’s contribution goes towards the community, but members are paying an additional $60 fee per person that goes towards administrative costs. This advocacy fee is a 140% increase from when it was just a $25 fee in 2021.

How Does CrowdHealth Work?

CrowdHealth operates on a very straightforward, monthly subscription basis. Members pay $60 each month for their Advocacy Fee, which grants them access to healthcare tools, resources, and a dedicated team of Personal Care Advocates.

From there, each month, you’ll assist other members with their healthcare expenses and medical bills. You’re allowed to freely choose which requests you want to contribute to, with each fulfilled request building your Generosity Score.

The higher it is, the more likely you are to have your future requests funded, with other members seeing you as an integral part of the community.

How Much Does CrowdHealth Cost?

How much you pay each month depends on several factors, primarily your age and the number of subscribers in the plan. In most instances, the monthly price ranges from $195 to $860. These prices include the Advocacy Fee.

PLEASE NOTE: While the ACA Health Insurance plans have a “80/20” Rule, which requires insurance companies to spend at least 80% of the money they collect on premiums for healthcare costs and quality improvement activities.

Take a look at the Advocacy Fee ration and how much you are paying each month. CrowdHealth is taking anywhere from 30% to 53% of your money each month – this is more than health insurance companies.

This is why I recommend a non-profit health share where 90% of your money is going towards medical costs and only 10% is going towards administration costs.

But I also understand that may not be an issue for you, and many people seem to be pretty happy with being in “the crowd”.

CrowdHealth Costs for a Single Person (2025 Prices – The Advocacy Fee Goes up in 2026)

The cost is $195/month if you are under 55 years old.

The cost goes up to $335/month if you are 55 years or older.

CrowdHealth Costs for a Family of Three:

The cost is $585/month if everyone in the household is under 55 years old.

The cost goes up to $725/month if ONE person is 55 years or older (for a family of 3)

The cost goes up to $865/month if TWO people are 55 years or older (for a family of 3)

CrowdHealth Costs for a Family of Eight:

The cost is $860/month if everyone in the househould is under 55 years old.

The per-member contributions you see are monthly maximums. If you and the CrowdHealth Community spend less in a given month, your contribution can be lower than these numbers. These contributions are also voluntary and there’s no required monthly contribution as usually in the case of health share plans. The monthly Advocacy Fee is required.

Member Responsibility Amounts

Members have a $500 Member Commitment, which is the amount paid by the member per unique health event before expenses are eligible for funding by the community.

Maternity care has a unique Member Commitment of $3,000.

Member Requirements

Although CrowdHealth claims to be much more open than health share ministries, it does have several requirements potential members must meet to join the community.

First and foremost, the CrowdHealth community does not accept tobacco users (which is defined as daily use for a period of 3 or more months – past or present). Secondly, they don’t accept those who are considered to be overweight (260 pounds for a female or 300 pounds for a male).

On the other hand, CrowdHealth is completely non-religious, accepting people of all faiths and beliefs. This is one of their main selling points and key reasons why so many are considering it as an alternative to health share ministries that typically require their members to meet strict religion-based requirements.

Pre-Existing Conditions

For pre-existing health conditions, you are responsible for all costs associated with the condition(s) in the first year.

The CrowdHealth Community will contribute up to $25,000 to bills related to pre-existing condition(s) in the second year, $50,000 in the third, and $100,000 in each year after.

Prescriptions are subject to the annual pre-existing condition maximums outlined above.

Maternity

CrowdHealth treats your entire pregnancy—prenatal visits, labor and delivery, and postpartum care—as a single Global Pregnancy health event. You make one $3,000 Member Commitment, and the community can crowdfund the remaining eligible expenses.

Routine well-baby care (check-ups, immunizations, screenings) from birth through six months is its own health event. To qualify for crowdfunding, add your baby as a new Member within 30 days of birth.

If your newborn becomes ill or experiences complications (e.g., NICU stay), those bills are handled under a separate health event, distinct from standard wellness care.

Eligibility Timing Rules:

  • 300-Day Rule: Maternity costs are not eligible for crowdfunding if the expected delivery date is less than 300 days after the mother’s Membership start date.
  • Baby Enrollment Window: Babies may join the Crowd two weeks after birth (and must be added within 30 days to crowdfund newborn wellness).
  • Pregnancies close to the 300-day cutoff may require an independent clinical review before expenses are approved for funding.

In short: One $3,000 commitment covers the entire pregnancy journey; routine newborn wellness and any complications each have their own crowdfunding events. Pregnancies due within 300 days of joining aren’t crowdfundable, and babies can be added two weeks after birth.

Turnaround Time for Paying Medical Bills

A typical turnaround time for CrowdHealth paying medical bills is 5-10 days from the moment you request funding.

The whole crowdfunding process is very efficient and straightforward, which allows CrowdHealth to quickly collect all contributions and pay for requested expenses.

As soon as the crowdfunding is finished, the company will notify you that your request has been funded and then handle the final transfer. All you have to do is request funding and wait!

Is CrowdHealth Right for You? Key Considerations

I attended a webinar earlier this year where I heard CrowdHealth bring up Health Shares. They say that they have caps/limits (not all of them do), that they have religious requirements (not all of them do), and that they take a long time to pay medical bills (again – not all of them are like this). This cherry-picking language about another alternative to health insurance is not helpful to the “alternative to health insurance” community.

I think we can work together. Support each other in our efforts to provide people with a powerful paradigm shift for people who want to find something else outside of health insurance. But let’s not forget that there are amazing health shares that have paid BILLIONS in medical expenses for their members over the last 40+ years.

Look, if you are looking for affordable healthcare outside of traditional health insurance, I recommend reading my post about the best health shares. I talk about health shares that have no caps/limits on sharing, that don’t require any religious affiliation to join, and pay their member’s medical bills quickly.

Horrible Service

October 20, 2025

I need hernia surgery. Crowdhealth tells me to go to a certain doc. After months of trying to get the estimate from the doc, Crowdhealth tells me it’s too much, based on their “fair market analysis”. So, THEY send me to another doctor. Now this doctor is too high for them. Meanwhile both doctors cost $300 each and 2 days off of work. Now they’re saying I have to go to a doctor several states away for surgery. Good chance I go to that doctor (2 days off work and another $300 visit) just for them to be too high also. So, I’ve lost 2 days of work (I do not get paid to take off), $600 in doctors visits and they tell me the doctors THEY sent me to are priced too high and I have to go to a doc 5 hours away for surgery. I went from praising them to completely disgusted with them. My rep is amazing but his hands are tied. F this company. surgery is $12-$15,000 and they will only give me $8,000 and will not pay me for the wasted days off and doctors visits they MADE me do. Oh and it gets worse, because I still need a physical and bloodwork to which is not going to be covered either. so I’m on the hook for about $8,000. DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE. WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT THEY WILL NOT HELP YOU!!!!!

I’ve been a member for 3 years after hearing them on the Tom Woods and Part of the Problem podcasts. This is THE BEST alternative to health insurance that exists, period.

When it comes to healthcare in the US of A, the facts of the matter are this:

1) being uninsured is gambling with not only your future, but your children’s future

2) being insured is the same, but more complicated and more expensive

I was in the military for 8 years, and Tricare is terrific (covers all expenses) while also awful (long wait times, tons of red tape, limited providers, etc.).

When I left the military I knew I didn’t want to settle for traditional health insurance, as it would be the awful (above) without the same terrific (I’m paying a deductible).

I heard about the Christian healthcare-sharing options, tried 1, and liked it OK. Then after a few years, I heard Andy speak on a podcast and found that there is an alternative to the broken system.

CrowdHealth’s crowdfunding mechanism is the secret sauce that unlocks the magic of paying medical bills without selling your soul. They send us birthday gifts, give away free books, are a bitcoin-friendly company, and offer discounts for those who can prove they are living healthy lifestyles (DEXA scans, etc.)

CrowdHealth has carried us through multiple pregnancies, COVID, kiddos’ broken arm, etc, and I can honestly say I’ll never switch back to being insured. It’s just not worth it. I’m hooked on this model, and LOVE it.

CrowdHealth is Amazing!

November 10, 2023

I have been a member of CrowdHealth since Nov. 2021. Since then I have participated in their coverage of the Annual Physical and I have had a major surgery (Knee Replacement). I am getting ready to have my other knee replaced at the end of this month. I only paid $500 to be able to have my knee replaced (as well as paying my regular monthly $176)! Because CrowdHealth found a private surgery clinic that was only an hour away from my house… I never had any more bills to handle. The only thing I had to deal with was my physical therapy afterward, which was reimbursed in full. Their Care Advocates are excellent and will help you find the best possible care. They work with many networks to find the best cash price available in your area for anything you need… even if you won’t be meeting that $500 commitment. I highly recommend CrownHealth… They have changed my life!

A smarter approach to healthcare for the self-employed

May 5, 2023

As a self-employed person, traditional insurance simply was not working for our family of 4. Crowdhealth’s innovative new crowdfunding approach has saved thousands for us and simplified our healthcare experience.

Health shares are not insurance and do not offer insurance coverage. Membership in a health share does not guarantee the payment or reimbursement of medical expenses. Each organization operates under its own membership guidelines, which determine what expenses may be eligible for sharing. Hello! My name is Holly, and I am so happy you have found my website! Before I left the workforce to become a stay-at-home mom, I spent 11 years working for an Investing Education company, later acquired by a large brokerage firm, where I specialized in Risk Management. With that experience, I have become very thorough with legal documents, which I used to comb through and really deep dive into each Health Share’s website to determine what medical bills are actually shareable with their members. I have created Health Share 101 to provide the information you need to make an educated decision for you and your family.
