Why Do People Defend a Broken Health Insurance System?

If you’ve ever spent time scrolling through Reddit forums like r/HealthInsurance, you’ve probably noticed a pattern. Post after post from people venting their frustration about how expensive, confusing, and ineffective traditional health insurance has become.

You’ll see comments like:

  • “My premiums are more than my mortgage.”
  • “They denied coverage for something my doctor said was medically necessary.”
  • “I spent weeks chasing down pre-approvals and arguing about what’s in-network.”

The frustration is loud and clear.

But here’s where it gets interesting…

The moment someone offers an alternative—like Direct Primary Care or a health share membership—the tone suddenly shifts.

“That’s a scam.”
“Health shares don’t guarantee anything.”
“You’re going to regret that.”

Wait, what?

Why Are We Defending a System That Keeps Failing Us?

It’s wild to see how fiercely some people will defend traditional insurance, even when they admit it’s not working for them.

Health insurance is supposed to be a highly regulated, reliable safety net. Yet somehow:

  • People still go bankrupt from medical bills.
  • “Covered” procedures end up being denied.
  • Families are forced to pay out-of-pocket for care they thought they were insured for.

Meanwhile, Here’s What I’ve Personally Experienced With My Health Share Membership:

✅ No pre-approvals needed
✅ Freedom to see any doctor—no network restrictions
✅ Transparent guidelines about what’s shareable and what’s not
✅ Affordable monthly costs—less than half of what I was paying for insurance
✅ Quick reimbursements for eligible expenses
✅ Preventive care support, including annual wellness visits
✅ No surprise bills because I know upfront what qualifies
✅ The ability to combine it with Direct Primary Care for everyday needs
✅ My monthly contributions help real people, not insurance company profits

And yet I’m the one getting called crazy for thinking this is a better way?

It honestly feels like there’s a bit of a “health insurance cult” mindset happening. We’ve been conditioned for so long to believe it’s the only option—even when it repeatedly fails us.

Let’s Talk About It

I want to hear from you:

  • Have you told someone you use a health share and had them react with disbelief or skepticism?
  • Why do you think so many people defend health insurance—even when it doesn’t serve them well?

And if you’re curious about how health share memberships actually work, I’ve got a free guide that breaks it all down. It’s helped hundreds of people figure out if it’s a good fit for them.

Health shares are not insurance and do not offer insurance coverage. Membership in a health share does not guarantee the payment or reimbursement of medical expenses. Each organization operates under its own membership guidelines, which determine what expenses may be eligible for sharing. Hello! My name is Holly, and I am so happy you have found my website! Before I left the workforce to become a stay-at-home mom, I spent 11 years working for an Investing Education company, later acquired by a large brokerage firm, where I specialized in Risk Management. With that experience, I have become very thorough with legal documents, which I used to comb through and really deep dive into each Health Share’s website to determine what medical bills are actually shareable with their members. I have created Health Share 101 to provide the information you need to make an educated decision for you and your family.
