If you are looking to add to your family, Maternity benefits are an important part in choosing which HealthShare is right for you. In my Maternity Guide, I will go over the Top HealthShare’s and go over what Maternity Needs they will share.

Altrua Healthshare

Maternity Benefit: In the first year of membership, the maximum sharing limit per pregnancy is $12,000. In your second year of membership (and every year after), there is a maximum sharing limit of $25,000 per pregnancy.

Sharing Eligibility or Limitations: Members must be married in order to have maternity and newborn needs shared. Members must be on the Diamond or Emerald plan before conception. The lower cost plans (Ruby and Sapphire) do not share in any Maternity needs. Altrua HealthShare requires that the expecting mother be tested for group B strep (GBS) prior to delivery. Any complications to the mother or newborn due to the failure to test for group B strep (GBS) will make those medical needs ineligible for sharing by the Membership.

Waiting Period: 90 days

Member Responsibility: Members would need to pay a Member Responsibility Amount (MRA) of $5,000 per pregnancy.

Christian Care Ministry (Medi-Share)

Maternity Benefit: Up to $125,000 is available for sharing on eligible maternity expenses.

Sharing Eligibility or Limitations: Members must be married in order to have maternity and newborn needs shared.

Waiting Period: None. Pregnancies that start after enrollment are eligible for sharing.

Member Responsibility: Members with an Annual Household Portion of $3,000 or higher.

Christian Healthcare Ministries (CHM)

Maternity Benefit: Maximum shareable amount of $125,000. If the Member is actively participating on the “Brother’s Keeper” program, then they would have unlimited sharing available to them for eligible medical needs.

Sharing Eligibility or Limitations: Members must be married in order to have maternity and newborn needs shared. If you are on the “Bronze” or “Silver” plan, they will not share in any maternity expenses. Maternity sharing is only available if you are on the “Gold” plan.

Waiting Period: 30 days

Member Responsibility: Members would need to pay their Member Responsibility Amount.

Liberty HealthShare

Maternity Benefit: The maternity sharing limits would depend on which plan the member is on:

  • Liberty Share shares up to 70% up to 125,000 per incident on eligible medical expenses
  • Liberty Plus shares up to $125,000 per incident on eligible medical expenses
  • Liberty Complete shares up to $1,000,000 per incident on eligible medical expenses

Sharing Eligibility or Limitations: Maternity needs are not eligible for sharing on the “Liberty Select” plan.

Waiting Period: 6 months. This waiting period is for all new members who start their membership on or after March 1st, 2021.

Member Responsibility: Member would need to pay their Annual Unshareable Amount (AUA).

OneShare Health

Maternity Benefit: Sharing limits up to $5,000 for a natural delivery, up to $8,000 for a c-section, and up to $50,000 if there are complications.

Sharing Limitations: Maternity is only available on the “Classic” or “Complete” plans.

Waiting Period: None. Pregnancies that start after enrollment are eligible for sharing.

Member Responsibility: Members would need to pay their Individual Sharing Amount (ISA), which is either $5,000 or 10,000.

Sedera

Maternity Benefit: 100% of eligible maternity medical expenses are shared (no limits mentioned on their website).

Sharing Limitations: None

Waiting Period: Approximately 3-4 months. Once a new member is enrolled, “any medical expenses for childbirth that have an expected delivery date within the first 12 months of membership are not shareable”.

Member Responsibility: Members would need to first pay a special Maternity Initial Unshareable Amount (IUA) of $5,000 for normal vaginal deliveries and emergency Cesarean section deliveries. Members would need to pay an IUA of $7,500 for non-emergency or elective Cesarean section deliveries. The standard IUA levels of $500 – $5,000 do not apply for Maternity Needs. The member’s maternity IUA would be reduced by 50% for utilizing a birthing center.

Samaritan Ministries

Maternity Benefit: Maximum shareable amount of $250,000.

Sharing Limitations: Maternity needs are shareable in Samaritan Classic provided there are at least two family members in the same membership program prior to conception.

Waiting Period: None. Pregnancies that start after enrollment are eligible for sharing.

Member Responsibility: For a maternity expense to be eligible, the membership will need to be at a multi-person size and at least 260 days prior to the physician-calculated due date.

Share Healthcare

Maternity Benefit: 100% of eligible maternity medical expenses are shared.

Sharing Limitations: If you are already pregnant when you become a member, Share Healthcare will only share in 50% of the medical costs.

Waiting Period: None, but if you are already pregnant when you become a member, Share Healthcare will only share in 50% of the medical costs.

Member Responsibility: Member would need to pay their Per Event Personal Expense (PEPE).

Zion HealthShare

Maternity Benefit: 100% of eligible maternity medical expenses are shared.

Sharing Limitations: None

Waiting Period: 60 days

Member Responsibility: Members only need to pay a single IUA for a maternity need. If you opt for a home birth, you may submit a request to have your IUA responsibility waived by Zion HealthShare (requires prior approval).

Conclusion

For almost every Health Share, there is a waiting period after enrollment in order for Maternity needs to be shared. Because of this, it is best to enroll as a member before becoming pregnant.

A lot of Health Shares have several plans to choose from, so make sure that the plan you choose will share in your Maternity needs.

Consider the sharing limitations. You may think that $125,000 would be plenty for a maternity need – and it usually is – but anyone can have unexpected complications that could cost much more than $125,000.

Hello! My name is Holly, and I am so happy you have found my website! Before I left the workforce to become a stay-at-home mom, I spent 11 years working for an Investing Education company, later acquired by a large brokerage firm, where I specialized in Risk Management. With that experience, I have become very thorough with legal documents, which I used to comb through and really deep dive into each Health Share’s website to determine what medical bills are actually shareable with their members. I have created Health Share 101 to provide the information you need to make an educated decision for you and your family.
