About Sedera Medical Cost Sharing
Sedera offers a medical cost-sharing model built around affordability, choice, transparency, and community support. Members share large, unexpected medical expenses with one another through a membership-based system.
When you join Sedera, you contribute a set amount each month. Those contributions help other members with their eligible medical needs. In return, the community supports you when you experience a major medical event.
Is Sedera Health Insurance?
Sedera Health is not a health insurance company. Instead, it is a nonprofit medical cost-sharing community—also called a health share. Many people choose Sedera because it provides a more affordable approach to major medical expenses.
Since Sedera is not insurance, it cannot legally guarantee payment. However, health insurance also does not pay for every type of medical expense. Sedera shares in eligible needs as outlined in their member guidelines. Members remain free to cancel at any time, which gives the community strong incentives to support its participants well.
How Does Sedera Work?
With a Sedera membership, you contribute a set amount every month to the community. When you experience a larger medical need, you first pay your portion—called the Initial Unshareable Amount (IUA). After you meet your IUA, Sedera begins sharing eligible medical expenses with the community.
This model functions similarly to a deductible, but it is not the same as traditional insurance terminology.
What Medical Costs Are the Member’s Responsibility?
The IUA is the amount you pay before Sedera shares in your medical expenses. Members choose their IUA during enrollment. In general, a higher IUA results in a lower monthly contribution.
Sedera offers five IUA options:
- $500
- $1,000
- $1,500
- $2,500
- $5,000
How Much Does Sedera Cost?
Monthly contributions range from $113 to $1,713, depending on:
- Age
- Household size
- Chosen IUA
Many members find Sedera to be an affordable alternative to traditional health insurance.
Requirements to Join Sedera
Sedera does not require a statement of faith. People from all backgrounds are welcome to join. The program works best for individuals and families who:
- Live a generally healthy lifestyle
- Want to lower healthcare costs
- Feel comfortable participating in a community-based sharing model
What Preventative Sharing Is Available?
Sedera includes limited preventative sharing. For example:
- Routine childhood immunizations
- Diagnostic colonoscopies
- Diagnostic mammograms (after an IUA is met and within age/need guidelines)
Sharing rules may vary based on cost, necessity, and age requirements.
What About Maternity Benefits?
Sedera has specific rules for maternity. Medical expenses for a delivery expected within the first 12 months of membership are not shareable. Members must wait at least three months before conceiving for maternity costs to qualify for sharing.
Sedera uses a separate maternity IUA:
- $5,000 for vaginal deliveries or emergency C-sections
- $7,500 for elective or non-emergency C-sections
Every member has the same maternity IUA, regardless of their regular IUA selection. This cost can feel significant for growing families, so it’s important to plan ahead.
What About Pre-Existing Conditions?
Sedera limits sharing for pre-existing conditions, similar to other cost-sharing communities. The timeline works like this:
- Year 1: No sharing
- Year 2: Up to $15,000 shared
- Year 3: Up to $30,000 shared
- Year 4: Fully shareable
Because of this gradual schedule, members with chronic conditions should review the guidelines closely.
Turnaround Time for Paying Member Needs
Sedera typically shares eligible needs within 30–60 days. Members should understand the process and maintain realistic expectations regarding timing.
Special Considerations
Before joining any medical cost-sharing community, it is crucial to understand that this is not traditional health insurance. Sedera works best for people who want lower monthly costs, prefer community-focused support, and understand the limits of medical cost-sharing.
Additionally, Sedera requires members to join through an association, employer, or grouped billing to participate in sharing.
Sharing Limitations
Sedera’s guidelines state: “No single need may consume more than one-third of the total number of shares available in a given month.”
This rule means some large medical needs may be capped, depending on the amount contributed by the membership that month. The exact cap varies because it depends on the total member contributions for that cycle.

When I needed them, they were there for me
I have had Sedera for 4 years since Liberty collapsed. In a routine colonoscopy they found a large mass that had to be taken out in a subsequent involved surgery. I was so worried about how this would financially impact me. They prepaid the bill before I even went into the hospital. All 64,000 of it with only 9 days notice. Quite frankly, how Sedera handled the finances was the least stressful part of any of it. There were no issues what so ever. The only negative in my 4 years with Sedera is they did forget to bill me a few months due to a computer glitch and that wasn’t fun to catch up but overall, 5 stars isn’t enough.
They screwed us on their own tech error and wouldn’t fix it
We submitted our new baby to the portal within the 30 day window that we were instructed. This update is not auto-approved, though. It is delayed. This put us in a position where our baby was not approved in their 30 day window so they rejected all of her claims. They told us that we were supposed to call to have it approved sooner, but they never communicated that in their initial emails. My partner submitted the addition within 2 weeks of having the baby, but we did not get a confirmation email which we should have received from the system. Instead, we got an email several weeks later, on august 1st, saying that the changes made on august 2nd (???) would be approved august 3rd. However, I went through my partners browsering history and she was not on the Sedera account page on the 1st or the 2nd. This means that we did not get the email confirmation at the right time and were unable to have them change the time that our baby was added to fit in the 30 day window. They said they couldn’t accept our browsing history as proof, and we didn’t have any confirmation otherwise because the email was not sent when she completed the account change. I tried to test the email confirmation by adding a new account, and we got an email right away, but that did not happen the first time. I found it strange that the wording of the email confirmation was different the first time than the test time, but the rep I spoke to claimed that was due to a time discrepancy with a tech company they contract. This is not to mention that they are tirelessly picking apart every claim that we submit saying that we don’t have the right information. It feels like they are picking us apart over every dollar, and that we got screwed on a tech issue when we tried our best to follow the policy. There is no element of basic human decency or trust. I would not recommend this company at all.
