The Initial Unshareable Amount (commonly known as the “IUA”), is not the same as a traditional health insurance deductible that accumulates over a calendar year.
The IUA is the amount the member would need to pay the medical provider before the Health Share community will “share” in any eligible medical expenses.
The member chooses which IUA amount they want. Typically, the larger the member’s responsibility amount is before the Health Share “shares” in anything, the lower the monthly contribution amount.
While all Health Shares have some sort of personal responsibility amount that needs to be paid before the Health Share community steps in, the following Health Shares specifically have an “Initial Unshareable Amount”.
Samaritan Ministries IUA
For Samaritan Ministries, the IUA amount will depend on which program you decide to join. For the Samaritan Basic, your IUA amount is $1,500. For the Samaritan Classic, your IUA amount is $400. If you want to change your program, there is a $100 fee to do so.
Sedera IUA
Sedera has five different IUA’s to choose from: $500, $1000, $1500, $2,500, and $5,000. You can choose any IUA amount and receive the same level of sharing.
Zion HealthShare IUA
Zion HealthShare has three primary levels of personal responsibility: $1,000, $2,500, and $5,000. You can choose any IUA amount and receive the same level of sharing.
All qualifying medical expenses submitted after the IUA is met are shareable with the Zion HealthShare community at one hundred percent. There is no annual or lifetime limit. For each separate need, the Zion HealthShare community will share medical costs after the IUA is met. You will not need to pay the IUA for a single need again until you are symptom free for 12 months. Additionally, you will not be responsible for more than three IUAs in a rolling 12-month period.
The video below provides a great explanation on how the Zion HealthShare IUA works (and even compares it to traditional Health Insurance).
